The objective of the project is to optimize the accumulation of bioactive phytochemical compounds and to evaluate the antioxidant, antibacterial activity in Lamiaceae family plants of callus cultures in vitro. Thymus vulgaris L. Hyssopus officinalis L., Lavandula will be used in this research. The plants belonging to the Lamiaceae family are characterized by antibacterial, antioxidant activity, anti-inflammatory, antifungal properties. The search of natural antioxidants (bioantioxidants) and antibacterial compounds (bioconservants) is important in various fields of the industry. During the project Thymus vulgaris L., Hyssopus officinalis L., Lavandula will be germinated in vitro under sterile conditions and will be investigated Lamiaceae plant callus cultures in vitro from different explants (leaves, stems, roots). It will be evaluated the amount of total phenolic compounds, carotenoids, flavonoids, bioantioxidants, antioxidant enzymes. The antioxidant activity by DPPH, FRAP, reducing power methods and antibacterial activity of analyzed plant callus cultures in vitro and plants in vivo using Rhizobium radiobacter, Xanthomonas campestris, Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes bacteria will be determined. The researcher will be able to perform interdisciplinary studies related to plant biotechnology, metabolomics, biochemistry, microbiology, industrial biotechnology.
Project funding:
Project is funded by EU Structural Funds according to the 2014–2020 Operational Programme for the European Union Funds’ Investments priority “Development of scientific competence of researchers, other researchers, students through practical scientific activities” under Measure No. 09.3.3-LMT-K-712.
Project results:
Researcher will be able to work under sterile conditions and will grow Lamiaceae callus cultures in vitro by using biotechnological methods during the project. Researcher will be able to extract natural compounds from the plant callus cultures in vitro and to detect antioxidant, antibacterial activities against pathogens by identifying phytochemical compounds and natural bioantioxidants. After finishing project, researcher will have competencies in plant biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry and will gain interdisciplinary knowledge, which will be applied in industrial biotechnology.
